Measuring Obesity

There are different types of tools to measure obesity. The interpretation of measurement ranges from statistical estimation of body fat content to exact measurement of body adipose tissue resulting in obesity.

Body Mass Index is an indirect estimation of the body fat content or obesity of a person. It is a pure statistical tool to measure obesity. It is a basically a ratio of weight to height square of a person, read more on It gives good idea about the level of obesity of a person but it cannot differentiate lean body mass from mass due to adipose tissue due to its limitations. But it is most widely used obesity level assessing tool. Assess your obesity level with our dynamic BMI calculator.

Waist-Hip Ratio

Waist- Hip Ratio is another statistical tool which measures the obesity indirectly. Infact measure the adipose tissue lying in close proximity to the heart. The point of interest in measuring this adipose tissue is its increased association with the coronary heart disease. It is simple ratio of waist circumference of a person to the hip circumference. It is easy and simple method and can be done at home. For males value between 0.85-0.90 is considered normal and for females normal range is 0.75-0.80.

Skin Fold Measurement

Skinfold measurement is also another indirect method of body fat estimation. It can give important information regarding body adipose tissue if taken from multiple sites. Measurement can be taken from 3to 9 different anatomical sites of the body. Skinfold measurement gives idea about the distribution of fat in the different body regions. However it does not tells much about the abdominal or intramuscular fat. Normally it is considered an inferior method to the height and weight parameters.

Bioelectric Impedance

Bioelectric impedance is based on the principle that amount free fat is inversely related to the resistance of flowing current in the body. This test gives quantitative measurement of body adipose tissue. It is a quick and simple method of estimation of body fat. The question of its effectively and accuracy is still debatable.

Hydrostatic Weighing or Hydrodensitometry

Hydrostatic Weighing or Hydrodensitometry is most old method used in the measurement of obesity. It is based on the principle that fat is less dense than muscle and tissue. This method of obesity estimation is not usually for general public as its equipment is quite costly and is usually placed in universities or research laboratories.

DEXA-Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry

In DEXA body tissue is compartmentalized into 3 following compartments rather than in 2 as in other body fat estimating techniques. These compartments are as follows
Lean soft tissue
Fat soft tissue

These are determined by the two levels of X-rays. This method measures the body fat most precisely and accurately. DEXA also gives information about regional distributional of fat and most precise whole body composition. The only drawback of the procedure is cost factor, as it is very costly.
